Buy Local Taste Tauranga

We all know that spending locally saves local businesses and during August you’ll discover the sweet taste of buying local if you attend any of the Taste Tauranga Festival events on in the city centre.

For the third year running this ‘feastival’, as organisers call it, promises to delight your taste buds and treat you to some amazing and unique experiences with exclusive events, specialty menus, a burger competition, Tapas Trails, the chance to win a year’s free dining Downtown Tauranga and a $5000 diamond from Peet Jewellers!

Organised by Downtown Tauranga and featuring more than 25 cafes, bars and restaurants working collaboratively in the city centre, the Taste Tauranga festival, which runs from August 14th – 30th, showcases the impressive array of dining options in the CBD.

One of the headline events on offer is the Taste Trails. There are three unique and fun trails to choose from. Book the Tapas Trail and you’ll arrive at Oscar and Otto to enjoy mussels and chorizo crumble on a pimento potato puree, paired with Pedro Ximenez Sherry. Then you’ll wander to Brooklyn Patio & Eatery for a selection of wood fired pizzas and crispy chicken paired with a Peachy Keen Cocktail. You’re not finished yet! Next stop Macau Bar Kitchen & Lounge for san choy bao boneless lamb ribs in lettuce cups paired with a Greenhough Organic Riesling and to finish – Miss Gee’s in Masonic Park will treat you to a layered chocolate dessert paired with a Raspberry and Rose Floradora cocktail.

There’s a vegan takeover going on at Miss Gee’s.

Maybe you’d prefer the Craft Beer Trail that starts with a Good George APA and hand crafted street food at CBK Craft Bar Kitchen followed by a crisp Easy Lager served with a slider trio of crispy chicken, vegetarian and teriyaki salmon at Cornerstone Bar & Eatery.

Once you’ve downed that you’re off to The Crown and Badger for slow roasted beef cheek and to finish a warm chocolate mud cake matched with World Champion Cassels Milk Stout at The Hop House.

Also featuring in the festival trails is a Date Night Trail.

Start your evening at one of our city centre’s most picturesque locations, The Tauranga Club, where you’ll enjoy a sunset view of the Tauranga waterfront with a selection of sticky pork belly and haloumi slider canapes and your choice of spirit, beer or house wine.

Then head to Barrio Brothers Tauranga for Chipotle Chicken Enchiladas, Chimichanga Vegetariana, Fried Chicken Tacos or Pulled Pork Tacos paired with your choice of house wine, tap beer, Corona or Sol. Now you’re ready for a special screening of the highly anticipated blockbuster ‘Tenet’ while snacking on a junior popcorn and ice-cream at Event Cinemas. All this for just $70 a ticket!

Each Taste Trail offers different nights and times and small groups so they’re perfect for you to gather together some friends and have a unique and memorable evening out. Or just book as a couple and meet some new friends on one of the Trails.

Downtown Tauranga manager Millie Newitt has two words of advice for anyone considering the Taste Trails: “Book now”.

“Every year these sell out before the festival even starts. They are just so popular because  of the unique aspect of being able to wander from one venue to the next and be treated to some taste sensations.”

The Trails have fixed booking numbers and varying price ranges to suit everyone.

Also featuring in the line-up for this year’s Taste Tauranga Festival is a 5-course degustation evening with wine pairings hosted by Mills Reef Winery at Trinity Wharf, a Top Chef and Wine Maker’s Dinner with Christian Schuler and Steve Bird featuring four courses with wine matches at The Hop House, and a Vegan Takeover menu at Miss Gee’s… just to name a few.

There’s even a Taste Tauranga Burger Competition that could see you winning a Burger Feast for you and three friends at one of the participating restaurants.

Millie says the festival is a true collaboration with the hospitality sector.

“This festival is as much about showcasing our amazing restaurants, bars and cafes to  the public as it is about bringing all our business operators together to collaborate, create amazing events and provide a  fortnight of unique and exclusive experiences for the public.”

As part of the Buy Local Buy Tauranga campaign, Taste Tauranga encourages the public to actively get out and support the hard-working cafe, bar and restaurant owners in the city centre.

“This has been an exceptionally challenging year for everyone. Our hospitality sector are working so hard, post lockdown, to revive their businesses and so we were determined to run Taste Tauranga for the third year because it has been so successful in the past and as another way of supporting our city centre businesses.”
