The biggest number of complaints was in regards to stray dogs roaming the city.

Of the 11,492 total known dogs in Tauranga city environs, only 69 of them attacked people during the last year, Tauranga City Council figures show.

The number of attacks on people are up on last year's 62, but down on the 76 attacks in 2013. In 2011, the city's then-9500 dogs were involved in 82 attacks on people.

The figures were presented to city councillors by animals and enforcement team leader Brent Lincoln.

During the year, there were 988 dogs impounded, including roaming dogs captured. There were 178 dogs killed and 810 released. Council's release rate of impounded dogs is 82 per cent, says Brent.

Since the council reduced the rates funding for dog control, registration has slipped by two per cent.

Council animal control officers are in the process of visiting every household that has not re-registered a dog, a process they expect to complete by the end of November, says Brent.

The biggest number of complaints about Tauranga dogs are roaming, 1783 complaints, and barking, 1361 complaints. There were 122 attacks by dogs on domestic animals, 98 people were rushed at and 69 people were attacked by dogs. There were 33 occasions of dogs rushing at other animals or vehicles.

There were 689 infringement notices issues and five prosecutions started.

Eight people in Tauranga are disqualified from owning a dog, and 25 Tauranga dogs are classified as dangerous. These are in addition 60 menacing dogs in the city and 120 members of dog breeds classified as dangerous in the Dog Control Act.
