I enjoyed this wine and it is always so interesting talking about wine with Dan Shea from Mills Reef.
I have put a couple of bottles away, so am particularly looking forward to trying it again in a few years time.
It is a rich blend of 55 per cent Merlot and 45 per cent Malbec, grown in the renowned Gimblett Gravels of the Hawke's Bay.
From the moment you pour it into the glass, see the deep purple-red colour and breathe in the violet floral aromas, you know it is going to be good. The intense flavours of plum and blackberry don't disappoint, along with a touch of spicy oak and fine smooth tannins with nicely balanced acidity. A good all-round wine. Ideal served with venison with a berry puree.
The Weekend Sun has a bottle of 2008 Mills Reef Reserve Merlot Malbec to give away to a lucky reader, visit the competitions page for your chance to win.
