With the emotion of the world and its ever changing directions, people get themselves easily distracted.

Financial planning at its purest is about using someone to stay focused on your goals – once you have some of course. Nelson Mandela believes that the biggest obstacle in people's way is themselves.

I am coaching my son's rugby team again this year, which ensures I am involved in his development. Last weekend, we played against a team that got a little frustrated toward the end of the game. It was a shame to see this and it has got me thinking – what is the lesson the boys should take from this experience?

I think, on discussing the issue with a few experienced people, the boys need to focus not on the action or reaction, but the ball. Rugby is a tough game, but violence – even as a reaction – is not the answer. If the boys use the situation as motivation to focus their efforts more at the ball, I think they will find this a much more positive reaction, having a more than positive result.

Let your financial adviser provide focus when making the next decision whatever it maybe – how much life insurance should I have? Is KiwiSaver really what is needed? Or even; is it the right time to invest?
