Providing the teaching resources

Jan Tinetti
Labour MP

Leaving teaching was one of the hardest decisions I have made but I don't regret it as I'm am very proud to be part of a Government which is achieving so many positive things in the education sector. There is no doubt that under the previous Government, education was neglected. I know this first hand as the principal of a local school. Things were very tough. But in the last two years the Government has achieved a lot.

We have 2000 additional teachers, three times more than under National, including 900 overseas teachers, including returning Kiwis who are work-ready and 10 per cent more teacher trainees.

We are providing free refresher courses for 2000 ex-teachers and the big pay boost negotiated last year is making teaching an attractive profession for our talented school leavers.

For many years educators and parents have been crying out for these changes and now I'm just relieved that teaching is now seen in a much more positive light and that teachers can get on with what they do best, teaching our children.

Another Government initiative I am very proud of is the free school lunch programme and recently, on a visit to Rotorua's Sunset Primary, I got to see this in operation first hand. Hunger is a real barrier to learning so this will go a long way in helping some of our most vulnerable children to succeed.

Schools and teachers can make such a positive impact on a child's life and it's so important that they are well-resourced and supported.
