Reasons to be cheerful – Part 44

Winston Watusi
Music Plus

We continue this currently weekly glance at things appearing on the radar at the Watusi Country Club. Those things that bring on bouts of beamishness in young Winston. This week it's all Kiwi stuff – lockdown concert stuff, lockdown art stuff and lockdown talking stuff. We're all in lockdown so perhaps some of this good stuff can keep you company. Any suggestions? We suggest you suggest them in the comments section...

218) Music – Stan Walker! He's a legend with a local connection and a great voice who has earned the respect of the entire country after his battle with health problems. Watch him sit on the sofa at home with just a microphone and an acoustic guitarist for accompaniment. There's nothing to hide behind in that setting and Stan proves to be delightful, friendly company as well as – as we already knew – a helluva singer.

219) Music – Dave Dobbyn! He's Dave Dobbyn and needs no introduction. Playing live from his own home studio the New Zealand veteran is offering an intimate concert. There have been scammers trying to charge people for it but ignore that – the concert is free. It happens live at 7pm on Thursday 16 April but you can always watch it on repeat. All together... 'We are Loyal – keep it that way!”

220) Music - Hollie Smith! She lives locally and everyone is a sucker for her soulful voice. Now you can join Hollie Smith in her own living room with just a small red keyboard and some Christmas lights. In the peculiar way that celebrities' cribs are oddly interesting I would swear that she pinched that sofa-covering quilt from my late great aunt.

221) Music - Drax Project! They're young, they're funky and they're from Wellington! Drax project have opened for Ed Sheeran and for Lorde. This is an American series and the rather brilliant concert finds all four of the band in separate isolation playing guitar, bass and cahon (a Cuban drum, becoming increasingly popular). Prepare yourself for a whole bunch of sweet harmonies, slick grooves and catchy tunes.

222) Art – 2020 Miles Art Awards! The art gallery may be closed but if you happened to miss the impressive 2020 Miles Art Awards then it's not too late to get in on the act. Artist Israel Randell took home the Supreme Award but there's still one more prize to be awarded – the People's Choice Award. The winning artist will have an exclusive feature launching them well and truly into the public eye.

From paintings and sculptures to bits of paper stuck to the gallery wall and other installations that are pretty hard to categorise, there's a whole bunch of art for you to peruse. I should probably mention that it looks better on a big screen – hard to judge the subtleties of these beautiful pieces on a phone!

223) Talking – Tauranga Arts Festival! There's an ever-changing bunch of smart stuff on the Tauranga Arts Festival website where you can relive some of the interesting, witty chat you might have missed at various past festivals.

Of the several options you could try Stroppy Women, a discussion from the Escape! 2018 Festival which delves into such matters as why 'stroppy' is a pejorative term used only for women and small children. And why the prospect of public scrutiny turns so many women off leadership roles. Comedian Michele A'Court leads an hour's conversation with climate action advocate and former Tauranga City Councillor Mary Dillon, long-time activist and former Green MP Sue Bradford and award-winning writer Tracey Slaughter.
