One of the real pleasures of Sideline Sids lifetime involvement with sport, has been watching the development of youngsters from starting out in sport to becoming good citizens and family men and women.

Last Saturday, Sideline Sid was at Pemberton Park to watch a shining example of the decade and a half progression of a promising bowler youngster in to a world class cricket player.

Trent Boult was taking the opportunity to play for his long time club Otumoetai Cadets with some down-time from Black Cap duty.

To add to occasion, he was playing alongside older brother Jono.

The local cricket rumour mill went into overdrive with the many spectators who came and went during Greerton's encounter with long-term rivals Cadets, being treated to a master-class pace bowling exhibition from Trent Boult.

This writer first saw Trent in cricket action as a15-year-old playing in a Western Bay Reserve Grade fixture for Otumoetai College, at Pemberton Park.

The future world star shine out like a beacon, with six wickets for eight runs, as Greerton were bowled out for 15.

Last weekend, Trent returned to Pemberton Park with his parents, partner and two young children sitting on the bank enjoying the occasion.

Little has changed at Pemberton Park in the intervening years, with a friendly greeting on arrival, the same modest changing rooms and a hearty home-made lunch at the change of innings.

Over the intervening years, Sid has been lucky enough to see the world class bowler in action, with some unforgettable performances for the Black Caps, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga representative team and Cadets.

The standout performance was two hat tricks in a game for the Tauranga side in an Attrill Cup sub-association game in December 2006. Boult was almost unplayable, achieving two hat-tricks in his dismissal of seven Eastern Bay of Plenty batsmen.

He removed the Eastern Bay top order with three successive balls, before coming back 20 minutes later to repeat the feat.

There were a couple of Greerton players on the weekend who are still haunted by a frightening display of Boult strike bowling, at the Tauranga Domain during the 2012/13 season.

Coming back from injury, Trent was in majestic form taking eight wickets for 37 runs for Cadets.

Such was his enthusiasm, that he hit the stumps fourteen14 times courtesy of several no balls.

Another celebrated occasion, was Trent and brother Jono taking all ten wickets against Te Puke in November 2008.

Trent finished with another eight wicket bag of 8/25 with Jono taking two wickets for 17 runs.

Last Saturday's Pemberton Park performance, was another Boult and Boult standout, with Trent grabbing five wickets and Jono chiming in with two.

The wheel has come full circle for the Boult brothers, from promising teenage cricket players to family men, who are role models and outstanding citizens.

The real winners on the day, were the young men from both sides who received the opportunity to play with and against one of the best bowlers in the world.
