The age of paper in place

So the city councillors turned down iPads and laptops in favour of paper? Judging from the comments, it's all about age – well there may be something in that.

But consider, while castigating the councillors for not leaping into the ‘21st century', it is very easy to forget that technology is a means to an end.

Paper and pen is technology and in some cases it does work better than digital mediums.

The mistake here is that one solution must fit all. That is quite stupid really.

Some councillors may be perfectly happy working with a digital device to read the docs and make notes.

Once done they can upload to a repository to be stored for governance.

Others may be more efficient with paper, it's what they are used to and they will process information faster that way.

The document can still be digitized and stored for governance.

Either way decisions get made effectively and efficiently. Those decisions and the thoughts, which led to them, are recorded for posterity.

And for me that is the important bit and the bit where money can be saved.

The tools to get there are of secondary importance and must fit the need.

Some of our councillors may be old and a little set in their ways, but we hope that with age comes experience and knowledge, maybe even wisdom.
