Here is my look at the first week of the Rugby World Cup and how the cities performed.
Whangarei: A cool stadium – how come we haven't got one like this? The town's waterfront and CBD were pumping, not withstanding a 'nigger in the woodpile” comment from the mayor. Lighten up I say – does Goldilocks complain when blonde jokes abound? Whangarei went off regardless.
North Harbour: A stadium that has been around a while, but is doing the trick for all the punters. It was sensational watching all the different nationalities having fun together and rocking on the shore.
Auckland: Great opening ceremony and party, party, party. It was a pity though that everything the public transport people ‘trained' for, fell over. No worries, 2000 people missing the game is not insurmountable, I just hope they get it right eventually and the punters can actually get to Eden Park to see what they paid for.
Tauranga: Oops, that's right, we did not have one. What a waste. Good on the crew from the Corner Stone pub though for actually trying, it was a damn site more than the council did.
When will the BOP Regional Council get their act together and realise the Bay requires a multi-purpose sporting stadium? It would be great if it was here, but there you go. This city's natural attributes are wasted.
Rotorua: Go vegas – at least you have a few games, all be it in a stadium that is getting pretty jaded. The boss told me he watched a game there during the Springbok tour in the early 1980s and it has not changed much since, except for a few rust issues over the years. Come on the Bay, you can do far better.
Hamilton: Well what can one say about the 'tron's” brilliant stadium. My highlight of the week was the local gay community saying they were being persecuted by the council. It was not as if they were being closeted or anything and the way I see it, they are damn lucky the Dutch team is not here – as not only would their defence be full of holes, (like their cheese), but a few of them, with the gay community locked in closets, would have nothing to do with their fingers.
New Plymouth: 'The Naki Rocks” – good on them for having a stadium that is named after a bread manufacturer – that, well, ran out of dough. Not a problem, up stepped a community who jumped into the entire party and put their fair city on the world stage and are having a hell of a lot of fun with it – good on them.
Wellington: 'Windywood”, the boss's favourite stadium along with Hamilton. The reason being after going to the sevens a couple of times he is still allowed back for a few other games. Wellington knows how to party; it's a proven fact and the 'Taffs” and 'Vortrekkers” turned it on, in a not typical Wellington weather evening, even I was dancing along to the rhythm that was being created.
All in all, it was a fantastic week for most, except for those in the trains in 'Jaffaville” that is – and of course it had to be Auckland that stuffed things up.
It is just so disappointing that the fifth largest city in this country – we even have our own weather spot on TV news – has not during the years got its act together and realised that the paying public demand something better than what we have at the moment. As the boss has said to me on many an occasion, 'Ady my girl, Eketahuna has better sporting facilities than we have”.
As I see it, I don't care where they put a multi-purpose stadium, but I hope it eventually is here.
Cheers all and remember party on, but do remember the old adage, ‘treat others how you would like to be treated', in other words, show respect and a little kindness to others – well all those not dressed in yellow anyway.
Next week I will review the South Island, but from what I saw, the party just continued – absolutely brilliant.
Take it easy out there.
