Debra Jager Home Instead Senior Care |
Q: We'd love to have dad come down and visit for Christmas, but he is nervous. He used to love coming to stay, but now at home he has a shower chair and other equipment. He has support workers coming into help him and he doesn't think he'll be able to cope.
You will be pleased to know there are a number of options available for you. You can hire equipment such as wheelchairs, shower chairs and commodes. There are a number of companies who are able to assist with this. Life Unlimited in Greerton, phone 07 571 6351, Mobility Solutions at the Mount 0800 002 886 or Restart Rehab at Otumoetai 07 544 9182 all have hire equipment.
You are able to buy portable handrails that you can move from one location to another, without leaving a mark on your walls. They operate by suction cups and can hold up to 75kgs. These are available for purchase from a number of places.
For support for your father, the family will be able to fulfill this role or you could use an agency such as Home Instead to come and help while your father is staying. Remember to let him have some quiet time to rest and try and give him a break from the grandchildren. I hope the visit goes well.
