I know it sounds uncharitable but every time I see Robbie Deans in his Wallabies outfit I want to scream.
Without wanting to be disrespectful to Graham Henry - and it certainly isn't personal - Robbie should be the All Blacks coach… plain and simple.
I was totally dismayed he didn't get the job after the All Blacks lost the World Cup. I mean, what more did he have to do?
He had certainly proven himself over the years with the Crusaders so the top job was the next obvious step up.
Let's face it, Graham had his chances. Four years, an unlimited budget and every resource known to man available and yet they still couldn't win the World Cup. In fact they couldn't even make the final.
What makes the decision so unbelieveable is that everyone with a modicum of common sense knew if Robbie was unsuccessful then our friends across the ditch would certainly nab him.
Sure, the Henry supporters may have been disappointed but no one would have been unduly surprised. He had had his chances and didn't deliver. I know it's easy to blame the coach but let's face it, some of the responsibility lies with the coaching team and more often than not, heads roll when the performances don't live up to expectation.
I note the NZRU has already extended the co-coaches' contracts until the next World Cup and it's a shame they didn't grab the jewel in the crown when they should have because my fear now is, we might never see Robbie Deans back coaching in his own country.
It must have been a real kick in the guts, and really he was left with no option than to take on the role of coaching the arch enemy. I will be watching the Bledisloe with great interest. Of course I always want the All Blacks to win but there is this little element within me that wants Robbie to succeed and that can only happen if the Wallabies are triumphant.
Thank heavens Richie is back. Now all we need is Dan the Man to be fit again. Before we know it the 2011 World Cup will be upon us and wouldn't it be ironic if the All Blacks and the Wallabies square off. No one could script it better.
It already has an element of deja vu.. I hate it when I think the Aussies have got one over us, but I genuinely believe that regardless of the victor on the day, New Zealand lost a real gem when Robbie donned the green and gold.
