In the first article of this series I'm writing, I discussed the importance of hiring right. Empoying a motivated and driven individual allows a remuneration structure that rewards performance to be implemented.
Every role in any organisation is able to be measured in some way and base standards set. Using these as a starting point, an employer can then set performance goals linked to commision or bonus structures. These provide a motivated employee the opportunity to increase their income if they meet these goals and in turn increase the profitability of the organisation.
It is critical to sit down with employees one-on-one and have them help set the goals. This ensures they will have ownership of their goals and provides less opportunity for excuses if the targets are not set.
Make sure the goals are realistic, measurable and based on a combination of the base standard and previous history.
Finally, constantly follow up during the goal period, be it one month or one year, to help the employee meet their target.
