Jono Boult will take over the captaincy of one of Tauranga's most successful sporting clubs, Otumoetai Cadets cricket club.
Jono was very close to a Knights contract this season after four wickets and 30 for the Knights last season, so cadets are very fortunate to have his services for the year. He scored the most runs for BOP last season and has been a stalwart at cadets.
Campbell Wilson was the previous captain. He stood down at the finish of a hugely tense battle to make the final of the national club cricket championships in Auckland last season. Cadets were playing the Wellington club champions Hutt Districts for the right to play the Canterbury champions East Shirley in the final. It came down to an immensely fired up last over with Wilson bowling and Hutt Districts needing 10 to win with one wicket left. The Wellington supporters were sledging cadets players from the sideline and it is fair to say it was being returned in kind when a Hutt player was dismissed. Off the first ball of the Campbell over, he got edged for four which made it six to win. A slow ball on his third, which went for a six off a mid wicket slog. Totally unlucky but the nature of a hit and miss last over.
Not having made the final of the national club championships or won the Williams Cup in BOP, Campbell elected to stand down straight after the game.
Jono's brother Trent is probably better known outside cricket circles having made the touring squad to Australia for last seasons World Series of cricket. Unfortunately Trent spent the entire time giving batting practise to the kiwi top order and eating room service.
An interesting aside is that in the Black Caps nowadays each player gets his own room. Trent commented that when first in Australia he would sit in his room in the evening wondering who would call him to go out for a meal. In the ‘old' days players shared rooms so you always knew what was going on if you were a new boy. Generally one of the older guys would take you under his wing. Now they post bits of paper under the door so Trent had to work his way into one of the groups in the team. Otherwise the guys have their partners/wives with them and so generally, unless invited, you leave them alone.
