Claire Rogers - All about wine Every week I have the unenviable task of sampling a wine with a wine representative in order to bring you a cross section of wine to suit all prices and tastes in an easily digestible format (a tough assignment, I know). |
A wine with a difference; once you taste this wine you will understand what I mean, it is stunning.
With a bouquet of aromatic white flowers, ripe citrus and minerally sauvignon fruit, coupled with intense yeast character derived from extended lees contact, it is a winning combination.
The palate is full bodied with a refined complexity enhanced by intense mineral and citrus flavours. An excellent sauvignon blanc – an ideal accompaniment to fish, poultry and vegetable dishes and especially aromatic white cheeses.
Dog Point is one of the earliest private vineyards established in Marlborough's Wairau Valley, a sheltered and well-confined geographical area at the northern tip of the South Island. Lots of sunshine, and low rainfall, and cool autumn nights, characterize the long growing season, enabling the slow evolution of a rich array of vibrant fruit flavours. Section 94 is a particular area of the vineyard. The title, Section 94, dates back to an early survey of Marlborough and in particular the subdivision of the vast Hawkebury Run. Wine for this vineyard shows distinctive yellow fruit influence. This together with extended lees contact in older oak barrels produces a wine with considerable texture and flavour.
The Weekend Sun has a bottle of Dog Point Section 94 to give away to lucky readers who can tell us which section of the vineyard the grapes are grown.
