The only thing that Sidline Sid didn't understand about the David Tua fight on Sunday was where the judges left their Seeing Eye dogs.
The decision from the three judges was a disgrace. While I have been a David Tua fan since I first saw him box as a 16 year old in Tauranga over two decades ago, there was no way that he earned a draw against 'Two Gunz' in Atlantic City.
Monte Barrett fought a smart fight to tie Tua up by using his height to lie all over him, and tie up his potentially dynamite left hook.
David should have gone to the body much earlier in the bout and when he realised he needed a knockout in the later rounds 'Two Gunz' held and frustrated the Kiwi boxer.
How could David Tua lose three points in the last round, courtesy of a one-point deduction and a knockdown, and still get a draw? The announcement that one of the clown's ringside scored the fight four points in David's favour was ludicrous and laughable.
Where does David Tua go from here - Good Question? This is professional boxing where money is king, so he will probably be encouraged to keep fighting as long as the promoters are making money.
Western Bay grassroots rugby was the winner on Saturday when another large crowd was on hand at Moore Park in Katikati when the home side won their fifth piece of silverware since returning to Bay of Plenty Rugby two seasons ago.
At stake was the Combined Cup, which is awarded each year to the Western Bay champions. While the competition is a step down from Baywide rugby, the integration of Katikati, Judea, Eastern Districts, Papamoa and Matakana Island with a number of senior second club sides has produced a meaningful second echelon competition.
A 19-nil lead to Katikati at the halftime break, suggested that the home side had their second successive Western Bay title in the bag. However, a Judea fight back saw them applying real pressure to the defending champions. They were rewarded 30 minutes into the second half with a converted try.
At 19-7 down Judea were back in the match, until the Katikati fullback dotted down for Katikati's fourth try of the championship decider. The successful conversion and a penalty goal with the clock ticking down resulted in Katikati taking out the match 29-7.
The Combined Cup awarded to the championship victor, was the fifth trophy that the team from the extremities of the Western Bay, has won in the last two year. Last season they annexed the Western Bay championship and first round titles, and then went on to win the Baywide Division Three title.
In a repeat performance this season they have won both the first round and championship decider - and they now go on in pursuit of the Baywide Division Two championship.
Seeya at the Game.
