Bay teams brilliant

What a weekend it was for Bay of Plenty rugby. Sidline Sid was in raptures with the mighty Steamers steamrolling the 'Other Bay' on Friday evening, followed by the Baywide club finals on Saturday afternoon.
The Steamers simply demolished Hawke's Bay in the second half. Five tries to one, tells the tale of beating one of last year's semi-finalists and there will be few better tries in the 2010 ITM Cup than the second touchdown from the Steamers.

A 90m near end to end touchdown came when young Steamers flanker Luke Braid grabbed the ball deep in Steamers territory. Lance MacDonald received the ball and continued the charge up the field towards the goal line.

It was left to All Black Lelia Masaga, playing just his second game in the Blue and Gold to plant the touchdown. It was a classic Steamers effort, turning desperate defence into five points at the other end of the field.

Another outstanding try came from the Steamers inspirational skipper Colin Bourke. Playing his 70th game in the Blue and Gold uniform, the captain brilliantly picked the ball up from a kick and chase to crash over for the Steamers' bonus point fourth try.

A 30-11 victory suggests that the Steamers are in the sort of form required for a top seven finish so as to play in the top echelon next season.

What can you say about Tauranga Sports, who on Saturday annexed a remarkable fourth successive Baywide Premier championship defeating Mount Maunganui? What is even more remarkable is that the four championship crowns have come under three different coaches.

This year's mentor Ryan Dunnett knows plenty about the Tauranga Sports culture and traditions having pulled on the blue, gold and white uniform a number of years ago.

Many of the local rugby experts (including Sidline Sid) expected the Tauranga side to crash and burn after their numerous Bay of Plenty players were called to Steamers duty. However, Saturday's performance must rank as one of the best of the club's six Premier Baywide titles, since the first in 1999.

On a day where only ducks would have enjoyed the rain and windswept conditions - the Mount side made all the running in the first half. With the Mount 10-nil ahead at the break on a rain saturated field, all but the most ardent Tauranga Sports supporters doubted that their team could come back and grab the Baywide silverware.

However, 19 unanswered points in the second half told the tale of total domination by Tauranga Sports in the second spell. The 19-10 victory was built upon simply playing the game in the Mount half in the second 40 minutes.

At the trophy presentation the Mount skipper praised the comeback performance from the Tauranga side. The come from behind victory, was built upon team self belief and expending every last ounce of energy.

After the Baywide Finals results, the Western Bay can lay claim to being the powerhouse of Bay of Plenty club rugby in 2010. While Rangiuru fell at the last hurdle, losing 22-10 to Waikite in the Division One final, Katikati won the Div Two crown. Te Puke Sports Colts defeated Tauranga Sports to win the age group title, with Mount Maunganui annexing the Senior Reserve championship.
