Claire Rogers - All about wine Every week I have the unenviable task of sampling a wine with a wine representative in order to bring you a cross section of wine to suit all prices and tastes in an easily digestible format (a tough assignment, I know). |
I recently had the pleasure of tasting a wine that is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's greatest red wines; Te Mata Estate 2008 Coleraine.
Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate.
John's late grandfather came from Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family properties to the wine. The first Coleraine was made from the 1982 vintage and created an instant sensation within New Zealand for unsurpassed quality.
This intriguing wine is a classic blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, displaying concentration, complexity and elegance found in the world's finest wines. It is deep magenta in colour with aromas of roses, blackcurrant syrup and dark chocolate. The palate shows great intensity with dark fruit flavours, espresso and spice underpinned by firm tannins giving structure to the long finish. Ideal to place in your cellar now to share with friends and celebrate a special occasion as it continues to evolve in the bottle for 15 years from harvest. This superb wine is available from fine wine retailers; Karo from Gambino's in Grey Street has a bottle at the ready for you great buying at only $75. Enjoy!
