Don’t buy someone else’s debt

It's really easy to buy almost anything through the Internet. But have you considered whether the seller is actually the owner of the goods they are selling? Maybe the seller still owes money on the goods.

When you buy a second-hand car, motorbike or truck it's possible to check if it's subject to a registered security interest (debt) before you pay any money to the seller. If you don't, you could run the risk of the vehicle being repossessed and losing your money.

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a government register of security interests in personal property (including motor vehicles). Tauranga Citizens Advice Bureau recommends that you search the PPSR before you buy a vehicle from someone other than a registered motor vehicle trader. To check if there is a registered security interest is as easy as going online at www.ppsr.govt.nz and doing a motor vehicle search or using your mobile phone.
