Helping the healing process

In the last few weeks we have looked at the role of nutritional therapy in helping return someone from a diseased to a normal healthy state. One of the best things about this approach is that it is very complementary with orthodox medicine. It is pleasing to see there an increasing number of doctors starting to incorporate these principles into their medical practice.

Nutritional therapy begins with a discussion about a person's health to identify the healing and defence processes that have been affected by the problem. We then start with diet and introduce a programme of nutritional therapy that effectively allows the body to start to heal itself. I have just spoken to one of the 50+ people I am currently helping with Polymyalgia Rheumatica. This person had made improvements with conventional medicine but was still really bothered. After just two months on an intensive nutritional programme they noticed the pain and discomfort steadily reducing with an increase in mobility and most importantly energy.

Once of the more common problems I see is for people who are otherwise healthy who are just plain tired all the time. Unfortunately this is often attributed to stress. Of course stress can be very tiring, but it is often blamed for the entire problem. Imagine a Formula 1 racing car designed for 100 octane fuel but being fed low grade fuels. It will run, just not very well. Our bodies are like that. Rather than stress causing tiredness it may well be the opposite; the tiredness is caused by the body's inability to make enough energy resulting in our feeling stressed.

For people who are otherwise healthy but suffer from tiredness, I will generally add to a maintenance programme a group of targeted energy nutrients that could include alpha lipoic acid, high strength resveratrol extract, Co Q10, various B vitamins plus the antioxidants needed to protect delicate energy processes. The results are often a quick return of energy and in many cases a reduction in perceived stress levels. Give the body what it needs to function properly and you may be surprised at to the extent of the benefits you feel.
