The annual Trike-a-Thon and fundraiser, facilitated by Te Puna Community Kindergarten, returns for another year at Te Puna Primary School.

Tomorrow, October 11, kids will be hitting the track at the school on their decorated trikes, bikes, and scooters. Anyone can come down between 10am and midday – but only preschoolers under the age of 5 will be permitted on the track.

Te Puna Community Kindergarten head teacher Ellen White said all money raised at the event would go towards the third stage of the kindergarten’s playground.

“This stage involves expanding the sandpit area, adding shade and incorporating plants – a project that will provide endless opportunities for play, exploration, and learning,” White said.

At tomorrow’s Trike-a-Thon kids collect sponsorship for every lap completed, White said.

“They were sent home with forms for their parents, family, and neighbours – whoever wants to support the cause.”

She said kids have already started decorating their helmets.

“It’s our big, community, fun event we have for the year. We’ve got tea towels with the kids’ pictures on, kawakawa balm, flavoured butters, a bake stall, sausage sizzle and plant stall,” White said.

Te Puna Community Kindergarten released its own cookbook in 2018 title Grounded in Goodness. Copies will be available for purchase at the Trike-a-Thon too. Tere would also be offering face painting, balloon animals, and a secondhand clothing sale at the event.

White said there will be a raffle and silent auctions with “fantastic prizes” donated by the community.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. The grand prize is a kids’ outdoor playhouse, second prize is a kids’ mud kitchen and third prize is a kids’ toy hamper.

“Kids can ride anything from a scooter to a two-wheeler with no trainer wheels” on the track at Te Puna Primary School, White said.

However, kids must wear helmets and shoes, and parents must supervise them.

White encouraged families to come down “for a sausage or a piece of baking or take home some vegetables”.

“It all goes towards a really good cause. We’re a not-for-profit (NFP), so all the money that gets raised goes right back into the children.”

In case of wet weather, the postponement date is October 18.
