Families across Tauranga Moana are invited to celebrate community, fun, and family togetherness at the White Ribbon Family Day in Anzac Park, Gate Pā, on Saturday, November 22.

The free event promises a lively mix of entertainment, activities, and an important message: the need to end violence towards women and children and promote healthy, respectful relationships.

Organised by Family Works, the event brings together more than 20 local community and government organisations, demonstrating the strength of partnerships in tackling family violence.

From 10am to 2pm, attendees can enjoy a wide range of activities designed for all ages, including live music, a sizzling barbecue, face painting, henna tattoos, a bouncy castle, a lucky dip, and a treasure hunt for children.

The day will conclude with a kapa haka performance by Te Ara o Tawhaki o te Kapa Haka of Turning Point Trust – Te Taiope Huringanui, offering a powerful celebration of culture and community spirit.

Vital reminder

Family Works Bay of Plenty area manager Julie Peake highlighted the significance of White Ribbon Day as more than just an event.

“White Ribbon Day is a vital reminder that family violence affects people from all walks of life. It is important that organisations work together to prevent family violence and strengthen communities,” Peake said.

“By coming together as a community, we can raise awareness and show support for those affected by violence.”

Family violence continues to have wide-reaching consequences, with devastating impacts that range from psychological and physical harm to long-term effects on children, families, and even the local economy. Family Works offers counselling and social work support for children and families, along with a range of group programmes. They also collaborate with other agencies to build safer and stronger communities.

Stand together

Peake expressed her gratitude to the Tauranga-Moana Abuse Prevention network for their swift support in organising the event. “Thank you to all the organisations in the Tauranga-Moana Abuse Prevention network who have been quick to rally to support what promises to be a great day out for all the family, including Tautoko Tane, Tauranga Living Without Violence, Tauranga Women’s Refuge and Gate Pā Community Trust,” she said.

In the event of wet weather, the White Ribbon Family Day will be postponed to Saturday, November 29. Otherwise, the event will be held at Anzac Park, 19 Anzac Rd, Gate Pā, from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, November 22. Families are encouraged to come along, enjoy the activities, and stand together against family violence.
