The countdown is on for one of Waihī Beach’s favourite mid-winter traditions, with the Polar Plunge set to make its chilly return next month on July 11 from 12.30pm.
Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services Inc chair Donna Pfefferle says now is the time to sort a costume, rally your team, or convince yourself that cold water is character-building.
“Dress up, head to the beach, briefly question your life choices, then charge into the water with a crowd of equally committed locals,” she said.
“Plunging is encouraged, but cheering from the sidelines is also an important community service.”
Organised and hosted by Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services Inc, the Polar Plunge had become a classic Waihī Beach winter event, Pfefferle said, bringing together whānau, friends, workplaces, sports teams, and community groups for a chilly but cheerful afternoon, all for a gold coin donation.
“This year, prizes will be awarded for best dressed across individual, Under-12, group, and corporate categories, thanks to local support from The Sauna Project, Bachcare and The Surf Shack.
“The more colourful, creative, or ridiculous the outfit, the better – animals, vegetables, heroes and baddies are all welcome!”
Pfefferle said volunteer Waihī club surf lifeguards will support the event, so plungers can take part knowing safety is front of mind.
“Afterwards, everyone can head to The Deck Kitchen & Bar to warm up with traditional favourites including mulled wine, hot chocolate, coffee and hot food.”
Whether you are brave enough to plunge or wise enough to stay dry, bring your best costume energy and be part of a classic winter’s day at Waihī Beach.
Waihī Beach Polar Plunge is on July 11 from 12.30pm. Entry is a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going back to Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services Inc to support its work protecting lives.
