Holes in the roof! Scouts need help

According to their own law, boy scouts have courage in all difficulties. And a scout is also careful of possessions and property.

But the keas, cubs and scout of the Otumoetai troop are being sorely tested.

That's because their den has sprung a leak, probably several.

Troop leader Karl Newton was up in the roof this week and he could see the light shining through the holes. The rain is getting in.

The rook is knackered and they need $5,000 as soon as possible to get it fixed.

There's about $2,000 in the bank. But as troop leader, Karl Newton says: 'we need help”.

And they're hoping a few pagan tricks and treats will help them out.

'We are having a Halloween party on Saturday night from 6pm,” says Karl.

'A hologram will be set up, there'll be lolly scrambles and spin the wheel. It'll be a fun night and we hope we will end up a lot closer to having a roof that works over our heads.”

The troop hopes to raise between $500 and $1000. 'But $1,500 would be nice,” says Karl.

So far the roof has been a two-year long project. 'We have had difficulty finding anyone to directly assist our fundraising and maintenance,” explains Karl. They've also had problems with a window. There was a bit of rot. Now the whole window frame needs replacing.

Otumoetai is a buoyant troop with 20 keas, 20 cubs and 10 scouts. But it could always use more, including adult leaders. And it could use a new roof.

The ‘Lift the Roof' Halloween party fundraiser is at Otumoetai Scout Hall, 140 Grange Road, on Saturday, October 31. Doors open 6pm-8.30pm.

Tickets cost $5 available online or limited sales at the door.
