Discover Matakana Island on memorial walk

If you've ever wanted to experience the culture and customs of Matakana Island, a fundraiser for Waipuna Hospice on October 21 will provide the perfect opportunity.

The Neil Scott Memorial Walk will be in remembrance of Matakana Island resident Neil Scott, who passed away in 2017.

All proceeds from the hikoi will go to Waipuna Hospice, where Neil and his whanau received 'wonderful and loving” care during his last weeks.

As well as a chance to experience island culture and customs, the 12km walk will take in stunning views via interesting and varied terrain, including farmland, hills, road and estuary.

The walk will leave at 10am from the wharf at Matakana Island to Te Ahipuhipuhi and over the hills.

Participants will need to meet at the Omokoroa Road Jetty at 8.30am on Sunday, October 21 with a packed lunch, drinks and snacks to catch the scheduled ferry departure at 9am.

Sturdy walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing is also advised

Ferry cost is $10 adult return and $5 child return, payable in cash direct to the ferry. Return barges operate throughout the afternoon.

Tickets for the walk cost $20 per adult, $10 per child (aged 12 and under) and $50 per family (two adults and two children or one adult and three children).

If weather is poor, the postponement date will be Sunday, October 28.

Limited spaces are available. Contact Christine Sadler to secure a place. Call: 07 552 6892 or email: christines@waipunahospice.org.nz
