Tauranga Girls' College danced their way into first place at Stage Challenge's first night of entertainment at Baycourt Community and Art Centre's Addison Theatre overnight.
Their performance on Thursday, June 16, won the open division. 'Tauranga Girls' College put on a brilliant performance, addressing a good theme,” says event manager Hazel Reid. 'It was really enjoyable to watch.”
Titled ‘Sacred Journey', the performance followed the process of a woman's tāmoko and what it represents – strength, beauty, fertility and the empowerment of a woman.
'We want to show the detailed process and the respect and beauty of this special art form,” the team says.
Performance judge Lisa Gifford says the performance had a powerful opening and a strong committed performance throughout.
'It was fantastic to see Tauranga Girls' College as strong, young women bring our history to life.”
Papamoa College came a close second with their performance ‘Dia De Los Muertos – The Day of The Dead'.
Katikati College snagged third place with their performance called ‘The Perfect Fit?'
Hazel says the schools showcased their creativity and innovation in a fantastic first night at Baycourt's Addison Theatre.
'You can see all the hard work and determination that goes into their performances.” Thursday night's show reflects how Stage Challenge is a great pathway for youth to creatively express themselves and their values, says Hazel.
