No excuse not to!

Play in the Bay is back in February with Bike Month. After a successful pilot year in 2012 Sport Bay of Plenty along with a vast amount of recreation providers around the Bay of Plenty will continue to provide more ways to get active and have some fun!

'The Doc.com team in the contemplative stage of action are Phil Shoemack, Neil de Wet, and Jim Miller”.

The inaugural Tour de Bay Corporate Challenge has attracted over 80 teams from all kinds of businesses from forestry, health, electronics, education and manufacturing, all looking to take out the ultimate prize of the most k's cycled over the month.

Keen cyclist and health advocate, Dr Phil Shoemack has combined fun and fitness to bring together their team doc.com.

'Bike month and the Tour de Bay provide a great opportunity for the Doc.com team to fly the health flag. As three public health physicians we know that daily physical activity is good for our overall health and wellbeing.

'We're also convinced that cycling in particular is great fun, easy on the body, and a wonderful way of getting around.”

Timberlands Rotorua have entered 17 teams, which are made up of an avid cyclist, a recreational cyclist, and a cyclist that may need a bit of encouragement. Rachelle Dunn, the Tour de Bay coordinator took the lead and entered the teams, then told the staff.

'I had great fun creating the team names, (The Wiggles, The Muppets, The Thunderbirds, The Spice Girls etc) and the staff were all very keen to get involved. We have an intercompany challenge going as well which creates extra excitement for the staff.”

Anyone can get involved with Bike Month – Recreation Team Leader Sonia Lynds is thrilled with the response and is looking forward especially to Go By Bike day on the 13th.

'It's a great chance to get out the bikes and ride into work, school or play. There will be morning Pit Stops along the way to refresh the riders and the chance to win a mountain bike – surely an incentive in itself!”

In each area there are activities throughout the month for all ages, fitness levels and these can be found in various locations throughout the Bay of Plenty (listed on the website) or downloaded from www.sportbop.co.nz/bikemonth

There are so many great cycling tracks throughout the Bay of Plenty there is no reason not to embrace biking in the month of February.
