Te Puke artists put their creativity on show

Constables Gallery will host the Te Puke Art Society's annual exhibition in November.

The Te Puke Art Society will display a vibrant collection of the community’s artwork during its annual exhibition at Constables Gallery from November 5-8.

Group member Monica Taingahue said the exhibition is a culmination of four individual showcases, including her own, held throughout the year.

“Each featured artist brings a distinct style, medium and philosophical approach,” Taingahue said.

The other three local artists with work on show are Julie Cross, Julia Hastings and Joanne Joy.

Cross explores the possibilities of textile art, transforming wool into richly textured works featuring New Zealand landscapes and detailed animal portraits.

Hastings takes a gentler approach with watercolour landscapes and coastal scenes that capture the changing light and moods of the natural environment.

Taingahue’s abstract expressionist paintings make a bold statement through sweeping movement and vibrant ocean-inspired colours.

Joy’s cheerful, imaginative creations span several mediums, from soft-hued circular canvases depicting gentle giraffes to pastel-toned paintings of mythical unicorns, and handmade multimedia cards.

“The Te Puke Art Society champions the idea that art belongs to everyone,” Taingahue said. “These individual showcases are vital for local artists, as creators often lack opportunities to display their work in a formal gallery.”

Those keen to explore their own creative side can join the society’s weekly workshops at Constables Gallery, held Thursdays 9.30am-noon and 5.30pm-8pm.

The annual exhibition runs from 9am-4pm on November 5-8 at Constables Gallery, Commerce Lane, Te Puke. Admission and parking are free.
