I first started to experiment with high potency grape seed extracts in the mid-1990s.

These compounds, also called OPC, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can improve immune system function by reducing allergic responses, acting as a natural antihistamine. I have no doubt that these extraordinary compounds played a central role in reversing the chronic bronchitis and other respiratory problems I had developed in my 30s.

Research by Zhou (et.al 2011) demonstrated that GSE reduced inflammation of airways by inhibiting allergic and inflammatory responses. I have found that high GSE doses are very important with up to 500mg of OPC daily in combination with vitamin C and bioflavonoids.

Further studies by Chatzi (et.al 2007) identified lower rates of asthma among Mediterranean populations and noted that this diet is high in compounds including OPCs and anti-inflammatory fats including olive oils and omega 3 from oily fish. Our Kiwi high starch, low vegetable and poor fat diets are the breeding ground for these diseases.

Add to this an alarming and increasing vitamin D deficiency and the result is our appalling respiratory health, noted by high levels of childhood asthma and other respiratory problems. Either get vitamin D from the sun or from supplements or be prepared to face a continued battle with respiratory disease and probably most cancers and many others.

I am not for a moment saying that a good diet and supplement will cure asthma or COPD but these principles, alongside proactive medical care, can make a huge difference to people lives. What frustrates me the most is knowing that so many people could make real improvements in their respiratory health by adopting these principles. Feel free to contact me for further information.
