In Malaysia there are signs in hotels and taxis that state ‘No Durian' - that is because the smell (or should I say in my opinion the sickening stench) of this local fruit is not to everyone's nose a perfume.
Similarly when buyers walk through your door they don't want to know what you ate for dinner last night, when you last washed your socks, or that your large hairy dog lives inside.
Smokers - it may be a little more challenging to disguise your habit, however there are some serious odour eater products on the market - ask your chemist to recommend some.
Think about limiting your pet's access while your house is on the market, perhaps the dog can stay outside in the garage?
All people are different and people like different smells, so it pays to be aware of what your home smells like.
Living with your pet, you become immune to its smell, so it may pay to check with friends and agents to see if they may be able to pick up on a smell you have missed.
If you really want to push the boat out replace some of the offending aromas with lovely flowers (best from your garden for you really don't know how long you will be on the market before sale day!) or percolating coffee (... and remember to leave a mug and note inviting your lovely agent to partake of the same). Some folk may even leave fresh home baking.
Fresh clean smelling bathrooms and toilets are a positive experience. The opposite (dirty or smelly bathroom or toilet) is likely to hasten your buyer retreat from your house and on to the next and competing opportunity for their dollar and family!
