Play in the Bay is a calendar full of exciting ‘give it a go' style activities and events to help you get active, have fun and try something new. Each month is themed and activities are held all over the Bay of Plenty for all ages, fitness levels and abilities. October is Outdoors month and is packed with beginner and have a go type activities suitable for all ages, abilities and interests.

Day light saving is here so make the most of the warmer weather and the longer days by getting involved in Outdoors Month. Most of us know the importance of being active and all the health benefits associated with regular physical activity but often we find it hard to prioritise actually getting out there and active. The great thing about Play in the Bay is that it gives you new ideas on ways to be active and once you find something you enjoy then being active and exercising won't be such a chore. Taking part in Play in the Bay is also a great way to learn a new skill or activity and a great way to meet new people.

Outdoors Month runs for the whole month of October and there is a wide variety of activities to have a go at that suit a range of ages and abilities including lots of things to do as a family. Over the month you can learn to sail, windsurf and kayak. You can also have a go at bowls, waka ama and airsoft. For families you can get involved in the family fun day organised by the YMCA at Memorial Park, go on a scavenger hunt at Mount Drury or join in the PORSE Snow Day at the Historic Village. A couple of quite different activities include glow worm walks at TECT All Terrain Park and McLaren Falls and for those who are interested in medieval times then you can have a go at medieval re-enactments with the Northern Horde Medieval Combat and Culture Club.

To see what else is on offer during Outdoors Month pick up a calendar from your local library, the Papamoa and Arataki Community Centres, Sport Bay of Plenty office or download a copy from www.sportbop.co.nz/playinthebay
