Briefings and workshops continue
Elected members met with the Board of Directors of Bay Leisure and Events Limited this week to hear their vision and strategic plan.
In January, as part of the annual plan process, elected members will be having a discussion on whether or not to transfer Baycourt Theatre to BLEL.
A workshop was held on the CBD and parking to update the newly elected members. I welcome a workshop with a random selection of 12 or so tenants to give elected members their feedback, thoughts and ideas on the CBD.
Annual plan issues and options
Next week, annual plan discussions begin – an important process to prioritise projects and budgets.
Major issues for December's meetings include Greerton Library, stormwater works and Civil Defence sirens.
Beach Rd works
I inspected the works being carried out along Beach Rd by Kulim Park.
At Beach Rd, the construction of a tipped rock revetment continues. The revetment will provide protection to the roadway, which had been undermined in places from wave action and storm surges. In addition to the rock protection, a combined 3.0 metre wide footpath/cycleway is being constructed on the seaward side of the row of pohutukawa trees. This adds another link to the popular waterfront walkway between Fergusson Park and the city.
The scope of work includes extending all of the existing stormwater outlets along Beach Rd, and construction of beach access points in the form of stairs and boat ramps.
Also associated with this project is the relocation of a 525 diameter sewer main from within the foreshore adjacent Kulim Park. The unsightly manholes and concrete pipe ballast will be removed when the pipe is relocated to within the park.
Most of the work will be completed prior to Christmas and the footpath/cycleway will be open between Otumoetai Rd and the end of Beach Rd. The contractor will shutting down during the Christmas/New Year period and will return in January to complete the work in Kulim Park.
The total cost of the project is about $950,000 with a portion of this amount being funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
