Priorities

Catherine Stewart
Tauranga City Councillor

Elected Tauranga City Council members have begun the annual plan process of discussing issues and options. It is important to note these decisions will go into the draft annual plan (see timetable below).

The Greerton Library redevelopment and stormwater issues recently drew a large audience in council chambers.

A background of papers will be presented to elected members at the end of January to fully inform those newly elected about the history of the Greerton library project. After further consideration, the preferred option will go into the draft annual plan for community consultation.

John Robson proposed a 5 per cent rate increase to address stormwater issues, with the money being ring-fenced.

There is no easy, quick fix solution for stormwater issues. As a result of infill, during many years, there has been an increase in concrete pathways, fences and other hard surfaces that contribute to flooding issues. In some areas, pipes are not large enough to cope with extraordinarily heavy downfalls. The city is being mapped to assist with prioritisation of long term solutions.

Once weather bomb warnings are known, staff at Tauranga City Council try to minimise impact where potential problems can occur by removing debris from storm water grates.

Claim a drain

My suggestion is, citywide, we should ‘claim a drain' – once weather warnings are known, residents and businesses could clear leaves and debris from their nearest stormwater grill. This may lessen the risk for potential flooding.

Timetable for annual plan process:

Tuesday, March 11: TCC adopts draft annual plan.

Monday, March 17: Submissions from community open.

Thursday, April 17: Submissions close.

Monday, May 5 to Friday, May 9: Council meeting – hearings. (Please note, evening time slots will be made available, if requested in submission).

Tuesday, June 3 to Friday, June 6: Council meeting – deliberations.

Tuesday, June 24: Council meeting to adopt annual plan.

Council meetings will be in recess until the end of January, when draft annual plan decisions continue. In the meantime, there will be lots of reading in preparation for January's meetings.

Season's Greetings to you and your loved ones. Have a safe and happy festive season.
