Find a biz buddy

In 2013 I went to Waikato University and completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Governance and Leadership.

This was the first time the course had been done and its focus was to give a qualification in Governance and give me skills in this area.

I had never been to university and I have to admit that in this class of 22 every person had either a degree, double degree or an MBA and there was me who took two years to get school certificate.

This blog is not about me achieving, although I would have to say I am proud of what I achieved personally and I am looking forward to the Graduation ceremony in April.

What this year showed was how important it is for small businesses to look for some form of advisory group or Board of Directors.

Small and medium businesses make up over 90 per cent of NZ businesses.

Yes we are all known for No.8 wire mentality and get it done attitude, but business owners could do well to seek out a buddy.

There are a number of places to help support you, Chambers of Commerce, Biz Mentors NZ and consultants available.

However, there can just be a simple need to pick up the phone and have a chat or bounce and idea off someone.

There are a number of successful business people in all regions who would be prepared to help.

This also comes with a caution too. Don't take this person for granted and find some way to repay them, either in kind or financially.

Our businesses get better and build a better community and better economy if they are successful.
