Mr and Mrs Hedgy will feature in Bellevue Primary School's fifth art exhibition at Baycourt Community and Art Centre this month. They're hedgehogs crafted from cardboard by Bellevue Primary School pupils.

The hedgehogs will be on show at the Baycourt Exhibition Hall from September 15-17, along with many more masterpieces designed by the children.

Year six pupil Willow Potton created a hedgehog from cardboard and named it Mr Hedgy. 'He is wearing a suit," says Willow. "My friend made one called Mrs Hedgy.” Ten-year-old Willow is excited to see her artwork on display.

'It is very exciting. Everyone in my class has said they liked my art.”

Willow has also created pattern art with colours chosen by the pupils. Willow chose to paint hers all colours of the rainbow. 'Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink,” she says.

The school isn't new to art exhibitions – its first was in 2003.

Margaret-Ann St Clair of Bellevue Primary School says the exhibition has since become well known in Tauranga.

'As well as family and friends of the pupils, the exhibition now draws interested people from the community and teachers and pupils from other schools.

'We believe the pupils should create their art to enjoy for many years to come, and with that in mind, we raise sponsorship and donations so that the exhibition is a celebration of each child's creativity rather than selling or auctioning their art for profit.

'We are indebted to all those family members and businesses who have offered their support.”

Bellevue Primary School has a roll of 430 pupils, each who have produced a minimum of three pieces of art throughout the year. Pupils were asked to create one piece of art using recycled materials in line with the school's environmental philosophy.

The Bellevue School Art Exhibition 2016 is at Baycourt Exhibition Hall on September 15-17 from 9am-8pm Thursday and Friday and 9am-12pm on Saturday.
