A revamped destination app is helping locals and holidaymakers make the most of the Bay of Plenty this summer, serving up the region’s top deals, attractions, eateries, and scenic spots in one place.
Tourism Bay of Plenty first launched the Explore Bay of Plenty app during the quieter winter off-season.
Now it’s been refreshed, with new summer offers from local businesses and a live schedule of cruise ship arrivals and departures at the Port of Tauranga.
“Explore Bay of Plenty is the first official app we’ve had for Tauranga and our coastal destination,” said Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Oscar Nathan.
“It’s helping visitors connect with all the places, activities, and businesses that locals love, and we’re expecting it to be super popular as we head into our busiest season.”
Designed for use on the go, the app puts key regional information at users’ fingertips, including dining options, family-friendly outings and activities, walking and cycling tracks, event listings, and historic and cultural sites across Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty.

Nathan said the app’s personalised itineraries and intuitive “what’s near me” suggestions were part of a wider digital push.
“We’re striving to be one of the most digitally innovative RTOs [Regional Tourism Organisations] in the country, with the app and our digital kiosk network enabling us to share important and inspirational information with locals and visitors alike.”
He said the tool was also boosting local business visibility. “It’s a great way for us to support local businesses, shining a light on all the best products and services they’re offering.”
Cruise passengers were encouraged to download the app to maximise their time ashore, while operators said the live cruise schedule was helping them prepare for busy days.
“Local businesses also appreciate the cruise ship schedule on the app so they can quickly check when ships are docking at Tauranga and how many passengers and crew they are carrying,” Nathan said.
“This helps businesses to plan their days and resources accordingly.”
Explore Bay of Plenty is free to download from the App Store or Google Play.
