Daffodil Day is upon us for 2026 and Katikati’s Cancer Society fundraisers Glennis Sims and Monique Amor want to encourage the public to donate generously – even if they can’t receive a fresh daffodil in return.

“Our daffodil bulbs are now located on private property on Woodlands Rd, thanks to the Darling family generously lending us space for them,” Sims said.

“But this year, due to the weather, we won’t have as many as we usually do in flower for Daffodil Day,” she said.

“We do have other places to go [to collect daffodils ahead of August 28] – but we certainly won’t have a lot. It’s disappointing but there is not much we can do about the weather.”

However, people could still give generously at local donation stations that will be dotted throughout Katikati today, August 28, and tomorrow, August 29.

Katikati will have Daffodil Day stations outside the local Woolworths, ANZ bank, Busby Baker, Subway and Family Mart on Main St from 8am-2pm on Friday, August 28, the fundraisers said.

On Saturday, August 29, two stations will be open from 9am-3pm outside Katikati Woolworths and The Busy Baker on State Highway 2.

Sims said close to 60 volunteers would be involved in picking flowers and manning donation stations this year.

Sims also thanked Andrew and Jo Darling for use of their land to grow daffodil bulbs for the annual fundraiser. “Without them, we wouldn’t have this fantastic area for good. Next year we hope more daffodils bloom here.”

Each year, Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society of New Zealand’s major fundraiser. “All funds raised go towards cancer research,” Sims said. “It is such a worthwhile cause to get behind.”

She and Amor, both long-time volunteers, have resigned from the Katikati fundraiser – next year a new person will run it. Sims volunteered for five years while Amor had done about 15 years.

“For Monique, it’s been a long haul,” Sim said. “But we’ll still be in the background to help.”

Daffodils will be for sale for $5 per bunch on August 28-29 at the stations. Donations can also be made at the stands, or online at: www.daffodilday.org.nz.
