Preparing or updating a will is a task many people postpone.

Wills Month in September offers an opportunity to ensure your will reflects the people, places and causes that matter to you.

Recent research commissioned by Community Foundations of Aotearoa NZ indicated that many Kiwis were actively considering their wishes.

More than half of those surveyed had either already included a charitable gift in their will, were thinking about it, or intended to do so.

Supporting their personal values was a strong motivation, while almost 9 in 10 of those surveyed prefer to support local causes.

For most people, providing for family in a will is the first priority, Acorn chief executive Lori Luke said.

“A charitable gift is also a fantastic way to support a cause or a community that has played a meaningful role in someone’s life,” Luke said.

During September, 10 local law firms will update a simple Will free-of-charge for people who choose to include a gift to Acorn Foundation.

The law firms included Anderson Law Office, Beach Law Papamoa, Burley Castle Hawkins Lawyers, Cooney Lees Morgan, Fenton McFadden, Holland Beckett Law, Kaimai Law, Sharp Tudhope Lawyers and Advocate Legal Limited.

“This means you can add Acorn to an existing Will without paying for the update,” Luke said.

“There is no single right way to write a Will. It reflects your personal values and should feel right for you and your family. Wills Month is a great chance to consider your options.”
