Te Ao Mārama Tauranga Library and Community Hub will open its doors later this month, with a dawn blessing and civic ceremony on Friday, October 16, followed by a community celebration day on Saturday, October 17.
Library manager Joanna Thomas said the day will give the community a chance to experience the new library, with a free programme of activities and entertainment for all ages.
“There’s something happening throughout the day, whether you want to hear from an author, enjoy a performance, try something creative or just explore the new spaces.
“We’re really looking forward to welcoming the community and seeing the library filled with people.”
Event highlights will include a performance by celebrated children’s author Craig Smith, a showcase of the Creation Station, Lego displays and activities from Bricks of Plenty, and a conversation with VJ Cooks founder Vanya Insull.
Visitors can also enjoy cultural performances, live music, crafts, guided library tours, see cranes and diggers up close and take part in activities for children and teenagers.
The community celebration day will run from 10am to 4pm, with Smith’s ticketed show beginning at 9.30am.
The new library is the first building to open as part of Te Manawataki o Te Papa, returning to its original home on the corner of Willow and Wharf streets, where the previous library stood before it was demolished in 2022.
