On a typical day, Kris Torstonson from Corys Electrical spends his days behind a desk. But come next Friday, September 18, the branch manager will find himself faced with a vertical challenge – complete with stairs, bridges and a breath-taking view at the top.
As part of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand's Blue September fundraiser, of which Corys is a key participant, Kris is going up and down the Mount from 7.30am to 5pm to raise money for the cause.
'I'll be running, walking, crawling, and basically doing all I can to get up and down the Mount as many times as I can under my own steam,” he explains. 'I'm competitive, but not in the best shape of my life, so how many do you think I can do?”
Pledges or donations can be made at the Givealittle page, givealittle.co.nz/cause/corysblueseptembermountchallenge/# or in store at the Tauranga Branch. You can donate an amount per 'lap” (up and down is one lap), or a set donation amount just for seeing Kris complete the challenge.
As a male-dominated organisation, Corys finds the Prostate Cancer Foundation a charity that fits well with them. It's an important subject to discuss too as one in 10 New Zealand men are affected by prostate cancer and more than 500 die per year from the disease.
In 2012, the first year Corys was with the foundation, the company raised $22,000. Last year, their target of $50,000 was surpassed with a whopping $70,000 by running the Corys Charity Roadie with a Corys Mini Austin driven through the country by the senior managers.
As well as Kris' gruelling task, the Tauranga branch is also holding a barbecue on Tuesday, September 15 and a silent auction on site.
Staff member Tane is also putting his hair on the line for the cause. If the branch can raise $1000, Tane will shave his head and beard. If $2500 is raised, he will get waxed from the waist up, and if the magic $5000 mark is hit, Tane will relinquish all remaining hair on his body (the eyebrows will stay).
Donations towards Tane's Hair Removal Challenge can also be made via Givealittle at givealittle.co.nz/cause/corysblueseptembertanehairremoval/# or alternatively, through the Tauranga branch.
