Last weekend I took my annual trip over to Field Days. Amongst the 10,000 steps around Mystery Creek it was awesome to see the many and varied products that our little part of the world produces.
What was also great to see is the way in which the agriculture sector is moving towards environmental sustainability on the farm, while actively promoting mental health wellness for those working on it.
The government is currently undertaking consultation on the Zero Carbon Act, and an important piece of this puzzle is the agriculture industry.
We are looking at a 30-year transition period, but making changes with industry and providing a just transition sets New Zealand up for opportunities to create a hugely powerful brand in the international market.
It's an opportunity for New Zealand's primary produce as the government looks to transition the country to a low carbon economy.
Adding value to our products is a sure way to increase agriculture profits while being kinder to our environment.
In talking to stall holders and farmers at Field Days, it is clear that we're all working towards the same goal, and I'm proud to be part of the government that is leading us forward to a more sustainable future.
