Great to be part of the Sun bloggers, an opportunity to comment on what's happening on the local and national sporting scene.
Not local, but absolutely fantastic that Roger Federer finally won a French Open. He now has 14 Grand Slam titles to match that of Pete Sampras.
Federer is a great champion. Can you believe that as a teenager he was a real scone doer! Looking at the ice man now it is hard to imagine a racquet throwing equivalent to John McEnroe. Apparently after his coach died in a car accident, he made a promise to the coach's wife that he would honour him by changing his ways and becoming a champion.
The rest is history.
Netball fans will be delighted they have another opportunity to watch their favourite team the Magic play the Vixens in the ANZ Cup. It is a real shame that Tauranga doesn't have a decent indoor facility to match the quality of the competition but I have my fingers crossed that common sense will prevail on all fronts and that the construction of a new sport and exhibition centre will begin shortly.
I have no personal agenda in regard to a new indoor stadium, my children don't play netball, basketball or any of the sports that will benefit from a new first class facility but lets face it if we don't move now, then as a city we will continue to be so far behind the eight ball we will never host major events, concerts or conferences.
Not to forget that the main purpose of a new facility is to replace the MAC Mount Action Centre and give our local indoor users the chance to train and play in a modern state of the art indoor stadium..some of those tireless volunteers need a medal for their patience.
Thank heavens the consumers voted in favour or retaining the staus quo in the recent TECT poll. We all know who will be asked to front up with a huge donation for this and probably without them it won't eventuate.
A city of over 100,000 people warrants a first class indoor facility. I look forward to the dream one day of the Magic playing in a home final and all the Waikato fans having to cross the Kaimais to support their team.
I hope that the debate surrounding this doesn't become a debacle like the museum project.
