It's time for the ‘OS' wars again: Snow Leopard, the new operating system for Apple Mac, is released on August 28.
Meanwhile, Microsoft Windows 7, which has yet to be released, is being run by millions of people already. Although their copies will turn off in June 2010.
I have had time to play with Windows 7. It's great; it will be a vast improvement for PC users. Of course this is the top of the range edition, so what will be missing from the lower level ones? Well for most people, very little. So if you are thinking about a new computer at the moment, hang on until October or make sure your purchase comes with a free upgrade. Don't get fobbed off by shops wanting to offload the valueless copies of Vista they have floating around.
If your company is running XP still, because they decided not to upgrade to the mess which was Vista, now is the time to start thinking about that long awaited and needed move, even if, for no other reason than it does not run Internet Explorer 6 (but that's a rant for another day).
I am pretty excited about August 28. Snow Leopard is different; it is not so much a new operating system as a consolidation aimed at making the whole system work better, faster, easier. For business users it will have better interaction with exchange. QuickTime gets a major overhaul with the ability to record your screen. I have found no info but I am hoping QuickLook has been improved as well. I have to say I have come to use this feature so much and it saves me a great deal of time. No opening documents which come in emails, I just have a quick look and only open them if I need to edit.
If one of the reasons you have never moved to a Mac is because you need your Microsoft Outlook, there is good news. Microsoft has said it's dropping Entourage (the awful Mac version) and doing Outlook for Mac instead. Good news for the Outlook addicts among you.
