What goes on tour stays on tour

Living in a household of males it is difficult to avoid having to watch the Warriors, the All Blacks and the Black Caps all in one weekend.

Thank heavens the Warriors won. Otherwise the sporting performances matched the weekend's weather… simply dismal.
You get that in sport. Despite the nation mourning every time the All Blacks lose, the sun still rises and, let's face it, as far as the French are concerned we should be getting used to it.
I watched the news with interest, where Steve Walsh, New Zealand's most experienced referee, was being interviewed in Australia where he has been exiled to.
It was most refreshing to see a sportsman (albeit an official) admit openly to his alcohol issues, confront them head-on, say he is attending AA and, with support, sorting himself out. It's bold and brave to admit one's mistakes on public television.
We all make mistakes and some pay more dearly than others for them. Let's hope the New Zealand rugby union gives the guy another chance when he has demonstrated he is back on track.
After all, some of our beloved All Blacks get plenty of chances and I note now that they are able to attend courses on how to deal with overly-amorous women approaching them in bars, situations involving drugs and the handing around of a 'P” pipe.
It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in the role playing sessions. I imagine these scenarios are conducted when everyone is stone cold sober. Yet we all recognize most incidents occur when people are under the influence of far too much alcohol.
It's commendable in one way, but laughable in another. Their status puts them in compromising situations but we hope that just because they are sports stars and thrust into the spotlight, common sense and decency still prevail.
It is a privilege, not a right, to wear the Silver Fern and to accept the responsibilities that come with that honour.
None of us are perfect and we have all had indiscretions from time to time. I imagine Sir Colin Meads is chuckling away at the introduction of these latest initiatives. He's probably lucky that in the old days the rule that what's happens on tour stays on tour was never broken.
C'est la vie.
