I don't remember writing this letter!

See here for the letter referred to in this blog.

I had to phone Mr Watkins to ask him if he was writing letters under a pseudonym, but he assured me he didn't write it either. I must say, that this is the very best, most sensible, most moral letter to any editor that I have ever read (apart from my own letters of course!) I would like to thank Roger Bailey sincerely for understanding and expressing these ideals and morals so perfectly – especially the bit that says; "If these organisations cannot survive on their own without ongoing funding from ratepayers then they do not deserve to exist." Oh, and the bit about Priority One and Creative Tauranga too.
Much of the success of Classic Flyers is also due to the fact that Classic Flyers actually means something to these people.
It is in the interest of the people who own it to run it successfully or go bust. Because it is their passion, they do not want it to go bust – they want it to flourish, and so they employ people to ensure that it does (either that or run it themselves).
This economic strategy can be applied to every situation with the same results, it is only when council get involved that the "all care, but no responsibility clause" comes into effect.
No council employee is ever going to take as much care as somebody whose life and finances are on the line.
Thank you Roger (and Bill) for getting it so right and brightening my day in what has been a week of incessant interference in our lives by council and government busy bodies.
If I had to make any criticism of Roger's letter it would be that he suggests that council should be involved (via funding) "a little bit!"
Unfortunately as soon as council or government get involved, a little bit always turns out to be a big bit.
People just cannot resist that temptation of getting their hands on free, easy money, and before too long they are pleading and begging council to give them more of it. This is where ‘wanna-be do gooders' get in on the act and run for council, promising to hand out bigger lumps of free money to those who scream the loudest for it and the vicious circle starts again.
