The Human Rights Commission has called for an increase in pay for aged care workers.
Age Concern supports this; these workers need to be valued for the essential and demanding work they do. They are caring for people who are often vulnerable, ill or disabled in both resthomes and home-based settings.
New Zealand's population is ageing and more care workers will be needed. It is crucial this important job is seen as a viable career option. Not offering private sector care workers a fair wage will lead to a greater number of workers whose hearts are not in the job and who may not be retained. A high turnover could also result in a lower level of care for older people.
Sideheader: Go for gold
At our recent AGM the Minister for Senior Citizens talked about her aim to increase services offering the SuperGold Card discount. To check this out use an internet search for SuperGold Card Directory. You select your region and the category you are interested in. However the minister suggested showing your SuperGold Card for every purchase to make retailers aware you expect a discount. You might be surprised, I know I was when buying cat food at my local vets.
