Five years ago I was part of a passionate and committed group of people from across the Bay of Plenty – from businesses, economic development agencies, councils and central government – who got together to see how we could make a difference in the region.
We had one thing in common – we wanted to see the wider Bay of Plenty region grow and be successful.
Out of this grew the Bay of Connections, an economic strategy for the wider region. It is now seen nationwide as a successful economic model that's helping drive growth for the region.
As chair of the governing group I recognise that a key to our success is the passion and commitment of the people involved. Our success has come through collaboration, cooperation and partnership and - hence the name - the value of connections.
Yesterday we released our first annual report. Aquaculture, forestry and wood processing, freight logistics and energy are all areas we've taken action on this year, with great results. The removal of restrictions on a state highway bridge, allowing larger trucks to move freight on an important cargo route, is one.
We need to maintain the momentum and build on new areas. In the coming months our efforts are also going into sport and recreation, including rugby sevens and biking, and the Maori economy.
The fact is our job is really just starting. We're constantly developing and growing and responding to challenges. There is much to be done in the coming months and years.
With our core philosophy of collaboration and connections I am confident that, as one region, we will achieve the growth we seek.
