Leave dogs to survival instincts

What a huge weekend at the beach – lots of stick-chasing in the surf, swimming after the tennis ball and generally playing the fool.

It was sad to hear about the US family that drowned trying to save its pooch from a sneaker wave, which swept its members out to sea. The dog later made it back to shore.

I'd never heard of sneaker waves. The only sneaker waving that goes on around here is when I get too close to the boss's lunch and he threatens me with his croc. Down at the beach, my mates and I have been negotiating the surf pretty well.

Please, folks, take care out there and remember, your dog can probably swim better than you. If it gets into trouble, consider your own safety first and leave us to rely on our survival instincts to sort it out. The boss has a very naff dog lifejacket that he makes me wear. He says it's as much for the handle on the top as it is for flotation. Personally, I'd rather wear a pink tutu than have to parade around the decks in this thing. Never mind, better safe than sorry.

The US story hasn't been the only one in the news involving dogs, the sea and dodgy situations. A week or two ago some blokes and their dog had a close call with an orca. Then they threw sticks for the dog to see if they could get the orca close again. Are they mad? Who in their right mind would sacrifice their dog to one of those beasties for the sake of a photo?

I've had a couple of close encounters with all sorts of sea monsters, including sting rays and seals, but there's no way I'd want to get close to an orca. I don't care how many folk think they and dogs are safe, I don't want to be the first one to prove them wrong.

Remember, if you need some therapeutic swimming, check out Jane's story last week. We've had a lot of comments on the canine hydrotherapy story. Best of luck to Jane and her venture.

Meanwhile, Ady and I need a bit of a rest after our heavy schedule; a bit of duvet therapy is in order.

Take care out there, and remember to send us your photos of your particular therapy. We'll make you famous.
