A chance to play tribute in Katikati

I'm looking forward to taking part in the ANZAC service at the Katikati Memorial Hall to honour New Zealand's brave veterans. Of course, Katikati has its own significant, permanent tribute to veterans with its Katikati War Memorial Hall and newly-opened Memorial Square. These are a lasting legacy to those courageous Kiwis who have served in conflicts around the world. To everyone who gave their time and energy to renovate the area, I congratulate you. You deserve to feel really proud of your contribution to our community.

Anzac Day is named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who landed on Gallipoli in 1915. The dedication of those soldiers fighting so very far away from home was recognised by those they fought alongside.

Tragically, about 2700 Kiwis died in the Gallipoli campaign. Those huge losses touched many, many New Zealand families, and continue to do so today. My own grandfathers saw battle there; though my family was lucky with both men returning home.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the start of the World War 1, it is not only veterans we pay tribute to. At the moment, nearly 200 Kiwis are deployed overseas. They're involved in peace-keeping operations, United Nations missions, and defence exercises. On Anzac Day, we thank them for their service as well.

More and more New Zealanders are joining ANZAC commemorations, showing the respect we have for such occasions. I hope you will join me and others this weekend in taking a little time to reflect on the service of New Zealand's former and current defence personnel in stepping up to make the world a better place.
