Budget 2014 is unsurprising, with the Government clearly trying to entice support from the left with tempting hand-outs to catch new votes.
What hasn't been mentioned though – and certainly of interest to the Tauranga electorate and population in general – is any real acknowledgment of the rise in our elderly population and providing critical support for them.
Additional funds for elective surgery are a plus, as is free medical assistance for those aged under 13. However, it's at the other end of the spectrum assistance with medical costs is also critical.
I've had a number of elderly constituent's report they can no longer afford visits to the doctor. From a look at the increased costs and additional charges medical practices are asking for, I can see their point.
A standard consultation for those over 65 costs $39 for 15 minutes. Beyond this time incurs additional costs, and extra charges apply for a biopsy of $51, an ECG $40, injections $15, removal of stitches $30, letter/note to a specialist $15, faxed prescriptions $21 and so on.
The increased need for medical services are critical as the body ages; the level and provision of services often determines quality of life and the will to live.
In an age where we have medical advancements to assist many aliments of the elderly, we should expect longevity. Sadly, our elderly appear to be shying away from medical interventions or services due to increased costs and accepting, perhaps, an earlier death may be the alternative.
Certainly, it would appear this Government has made no consideration in its recent budget to the plight of the elderly to make ends meet.
We need to look seriously what we can do better to care for our elderly with respect to their ever-increasing medical costs, to ensure they have the quality and fullest life they deserve.
