Ensuring our children have a great education means we ensure New Zealand has a bright future.
Today's children are tomorrow's teachers, leaders and innovators.
Education is one National's top priorities, so I'm pleased latest information shows Kiwi children are achieving improved results across the board.
I've been reading with interest newly-released Public Achievement Information, which gives our children great marks.
It shows more than three-quarters of more than 400,000 primary school children assessed in reading, writing and maths last year were at, or above, National Standards.
The information also means we can identify children who aren't doing as well and in what areas, so they can get specific help. This makes a huge difference long-term.
We're also getting children involved in formal learning at a really early age. I'm impressed to see an incredible 95.9 per cent of new entrants have taken part in early childhood education, so they're well prepared to start school.
As for our high school students, the proportion of 18-year-olds with NCEA Level 2, or an equivalent qualification, was up to 78.6 per cent last year.
These are great results. Our children and young people are engaged in learning and they're getting results.
We must thank our hard-working teachers. They are innovative, creative and dedicated. It's reassuring to know our children will be going out in the world equipped with the skills they need to build a bright future for our country.
Election countdown
Parliament has now risen and the election is just weeks away. Representing our region and the Coromandel electorate in the New Zealand Parliament is a privilege and a role I take very seriously.
It's big electorate stretching from Katikati and Athenree, all the way to the top of the Coromandel Peninsula, as well as the entire Hauraki Plains.
Since being elected in 2011, I've worked hard every day to ensure the region has a strong voice in parliament and government.
I'm now working harder than ever to earn the privilege of again representing you in the 51st Parliament.
Please never hesitate to get in touch if you have ideas or thoughts you'd like to share with me, or if you have an issue I may be able to assist with.
